Planning for a fall birthday party

I offered Miss C to host her party at home and have a sleep-over. I said we'd get the house in tip-top shape and that we could redecorate and paint her room. She declined. She wants to have an apple-picking birthday.

This year, we'll give her a birthday with friends. So I have some planning to do and a budget to prepare. Our orchard of choice is the one we go to every year: Jude Pomme. It's a no-fail place with so many varieties that everyone finds an apple to their taste.

Day 6 - Fête des rois / Epiphany

The tradition for Epiphany is that you eat a cake with a bean hidden inside and whoever gets the bean is the king/queen. Well, my boy cheated 'cause we could see the "bean" in the slice, so we decided to make the Bugmeister into our king for the day. Ain't he cute!

It's been a fun day. I started by making french toast for the kids as they had requested, plenty of fresh fruit to go with and some strawberry whipped cream. We then headed out, bought some secondhand skates for Felix and went to Barani for some trampolining since Charlotte wanted to show us her new jump. See the picture for a small sample. It was awful. The place was jammed packed and I must say it is really stupid of them to only open for 90 minutes, it's really too short.

Right after that, we went to the skating rink to meet up with my friend Caro and her kids. You can see her daughter with Miss C. Charlotte really had a great time except her socks were too low and she got a burn on her ankle. Felix seemed to appreciate his new skates.

My word is CHALLENGE

My first challenge to myself is to get my stuff organized in the house. I've started by buying a filing system and have been cleaning my papers. I've filled a large recycling bin with old magazine clippings and all kinds of unnecessary crap. This first challenge has started on a very sour note since I received some very negative comments from my father. I must say, this is a very unpleasant start to the year. Will I challenge myself to better my relationships with my family?

To organize my papers, I bought a filing box with some purple suspended files and various colored files. I started labeling the files with my Dymo labeler. So far, it's mostly papers stuffed into folders, but I'll clean it all up within the month.

I'm also trying to organize my room. It's a huge mess. Not enough storage and too much stuff. I've emptied 2 of the four bins under the bed and will empty the other 2 soon enough. I've also been clearing out the magazine boxes, no need to keep so many mags just to gather dust. I'd already cut back on my magazine purchases with just one regular purchase (which is unavailable at the library) and an occasional extra one, but only ones I really want to keep.

Now, only one day left before I go back to work. Tomorrow I want to take the kids trampolining and if I'm feeling up to it, take Miss C skating.

My next challenge will be to cook more, trying new recipes and such.

I made quick green vanilla cupcakes for the kids last night. I didn't feel like making a buttercream, so I made a milk chocolate ganache this morning. For the grown-ups, I put some Bailey's in the ganache. Yum!

Mr Clown Man came home alone tonight. We had gone to Ikea and he left me and the kids to go with my dad to the country. He came home and found Nigiri dead :( She was going to 4 this summer. We don't know what she died of. She had the flu. But she wasn't sick anymore. She passed the flu to the other cats. I'm hoping the other cats are safe. Here are pics from when she was a kitten. I posted a pic of her recently.

I LOOOOOVE huge mugs! I use them as mugs and as bowls for cereal and soups and pasta. We found white huge mugs today. Since I *needed* my own mug/bowl for the office, I had the kids paint one for me. So they each painted a side. The boy painted fishing stick people and the girl painted her combo bear. Can't wait to use it at the office.

Today was a ped day, I took the day off from work. Since it was cold enough to skate outside, but not so cold that we'd have an awful time being outside, we drove to Ottawa and took the kids to the Rideau canal. Miss C loved it most. Mr F is a bit sick and his skates are missing the inner sole so his feet hurt (we didn't know the sole was missing, we got his skates on major discount ($300 Nike skates down to $25 brand new)

The city decided to install a bicycle bicycle path on the street leading to the kids's school. That street is a one-way uphill street with 2 hospitals on the top of the hill as well as a big university campus. The university and the school are doing construction/maintenance work. The university is doing major work involving truck deliveries daily. Well, this truck got stuck in the bike path median. Installing a bike path on that street, in the fall of all seasons, really, seriously, not the smartest thing the city has ever done, but does the city ever do anything right???

Here are some sweet suggestions to make with or without kids :

- Heart shaped Rice Krispies treats made with strawberry marshmallow or use freeze dried red berries
- Make homemade strawberry marshmallow and cut into hearts using a heart shaped cookie cutter (the recipe from Brownie Points has been tried and tested and works wonderfully!)
- How about some cake truffles like Bakerella makes. The red velvet cake is perfect! But once again, any pink cake would do. I personally prefer a cherry cake.
- Let's not forget heart-shaped cookies, but filling them with a nice raspberry jam is even better!

Reading in bed. For some reason, the kids just love this comic strip. It's french, the series is "Les Légendaires". They borrow the books from the library over and over again. So they stared getting them for gifts before and at Christmas. Now they are buying them with their own money. The 12th issue is coming out soon. At least, it's a good investment when a book is read more then once! (they've read them at least 5 times each!)

But since I need something to blog about, I thought I'd do a Valentine's day countdown with products, recipes and crafts related to hearts, pink and red that I like. So let's start with the amazing 2-quart Le Creuset pot found at cooking.com for US$149.95. It is also offered in Canada at Golda's Kitchen for C$210.

To achieve my goal, I will use my blog to archive some of my favorite recipes. I will post them as I cook them so that I can try to take a picture of the result. In the end, I will have less paper in my recipe binder. I might print them out on cards to add to my recipe box, but no more binder.

The first three recipes I posted (red soup, green soup and mushroom/chicken pasta) are recipes that I make regularly and end up looking for the recipe each time. Now I'll just have to pop the laptop on the counter to get ready to cook!

Creamy Chicken and Mushroom Fettuccine (adapted from ilovepasta.org)

12 oz fettuccine, uncooked
8 oz boneless, skinless chicken cut into 1/2-inch cubes (I use chicken breast)
8 oz mushrooms, sliced
1/2 cup dices red bell pepper
1 1/2 cup low-fat mayonnaise
3/4 cup skim milk
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
1/2 tespoon paprika
Salt and pepper to taste

Cook the pasta al-dente.
Coat a large pan with cooking spray. Add the chicken and sauté over medium-high heat, stirring frequently, until the chicken is golden brown and cooked through, about 4 minutes. Remove the chicken from the pan. Recoat the skillet with cooking spray. Add the mushrooms and the red peppers and sauté until tender (about 5 minutes).

In a 500 mL jar, combine the mayonnaise, milk, cheese, paprika and S&P. Pour over the vegetables, add the chicken and heat over medium-low heat until thoroughly heated.

When the pasta is done, drain and return to the pasta pot. Add the pan conteent and mix well. Serve immediately.

Approximate nutritional value:
Calories: 563
Protein: 26g
Carbohydrates: 90g
Fat: 10g

Green Soup (from a Montreal Gazette clipping)

Green Soup (serves 8)

1 tablespooon butter
1 1/2 cups sliced leeks (white part only)
1 small onion, sliced
6 cups chicken stock
1 small coarsely chopped potato
Salt and pepper to taste
1 bunch fresh spinach, rough stems removed
2 bunches watercress, rough stems removed
1/2 cup milk (optional) - or add a dollop of sour cream to each bowl

In a large pot, melt the butter, add the leeks and onions, sauté for 5 minutes on medium heat.
Stir in the stock, potato, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil.
Reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, until the potato is done (about 20 minutes).
Ten minutes before the end of cooking, add the spinach and 1 1/2 bunch of the watercress. Cool slightly, pulse carefully in a food processor, adding the remaining watercress. Return the soup to the pot, add the milk and heat gently.

Approximate nutritional value:
Calories: 50
Protein: 2g
Fat: 2g
Carbohydrates: 8g
Fiber: 2g

Mild Red Pepper and Tomato Soup (from a Montreal Gazette clipping, date unknown)

Mild Red Pepper and Tomato Soup (serves 6)

1 cup chopped onion
2 cups chopped sweet red peppers
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 can (19 once/540 ml) of tomatoes, drained and chopped
1 1/2 cups water
1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
1 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground pepper to taste
Sour cream
Parsley

In a 3L pot, heat olive oil and sauté onions and red peppers over medium heat until tender. Add tomatoes and simmer, uncovered for 10 minutes. Place in a blender with water and spin quickly until blended but not completely smooth. Add lemon peel, salt and pepper. Return to pot, cover partially and bring to a simmer. Serve topped with sour cream and chopped parsley.

Approximately (excluding sour cream):
125 calories per serving
Fat: 9g
Protein: 2g
Carbohydrates: 12g
Dietary fiber: 3g

Very blurry picture, not the best of the day, but it captures a great scene. The kids are now in the same class at circus school and while they were both supposed to be practicing their jumps, they stopped for a chat.

So I wanted to do good for me and register to a spin class. Sadly, all the classes were already full. So I decided to registered to the gym. Let's see how often I get to go...

Now for today's picture... We missed Epiphany yesterday because I had a class at 6pm and the bakery was closing at 5pm. So we made up tonight. So here is this year's king.

I admit it, today I only had my morning pic of the kids. So I looked around the bed and here's a subject I found. Her white fur reflects too much the flash so I had a tough getting getting an even half-decent picture. So here's Nigiri aka Tite Minette.

Since school started in September, I've been taking almost daily photos in front of the school. Obviously, I lost all of October when I lost my camera. This is the first day back to school, it was mighty cold today.

I better start catching up on things. This is the last day with no activities, tomorrow it's back to work for me and the kids start school on Tuesday.

I have to finish the laundry, folded and put away. Complete the calendar for January so that we know who goes where on which day. I have to prepare my school supplies since university starts this week, still unsure about my course load. Plan the meals for the week, quick run to the grocery store.

Most importantly, we have books due at the library, so we need to do a quick run their and select some books.

I'll start by putting a load in the machine and grab a quick wake-me-up shower.
